Ask the Holistic Pros: Can Osteoarthritis Be Treated Naturally? Our Holistic Experts Weigh In

Text reads "QUESTION ANSWER OSTEOARTHRITIS" with two speech bubbles. Below, "Holistic Solutions from NHN Providers" and a green logo.

At the Natural Health Network, we believe in the power of community—and in the power of real answers from trusted professionals. That’s why we've launched "Ask the Holistic Pros," an initiative designed to connect YOU with the insight and experience of our expert NHN members. Whether you're dealing with a personal health concern, wondering which products and services you can trust, supporting a loved one, or just feeling overwhelmed by all the options out there, we're here to help you get clear, compassionate, and informed answers.

We choose a question submitted by our newsletter subscribers and social media followers and present it to our network of vetted holistic professionals. (The more questions we get on a specific subject, the more likely it will be to be chosen.) Their responses will then be published here on the blog and in our monthly newsletter—along with links to NHN profiles so you can explore their work and connect directly if you'd like more support.

This month’s question comes from a concerned family member:

Q: “Are there any holistic approaches to treating osteoarthritis? A loved one was recently diagnosed and told there wasn’t much hope for quality of life.”

Below, you’ll find thoughtful answers on holistic approaches from several of our NHN professionals. These responses reflect a variety of perspectives—including nutrition, movement, supplementation, and integrative therapies—and are intended to empower you with new possibilities and hope.

Response from Chase Banks, DC,CCSP - Finish First Injury Prevention Specialists

"Holistic Approach to Osteoarthritis Management

1. Movement & Physical Therapy

  • Low-impact exercises like swimming, yoga, or walking help keep joints mobile without too much stress.

  • Physical therapy tailored to strengthening muscles around the affected joints can reduce pain and improve function – such as Neubie therapy.

  • Gentle stretching to maintain range of motion is key – time with Alicia to show proper stretching and mobility work.

2. Nutrition & Supplements

  • Anti-inflammatory diet: Think Mediterranean—rich in omega-3s (like fatty fish, flaxseed), fruits, leafy greens, olive oil, nuts.

  • Supplements to consider (check with a myself or other providers first based on other health concerns/medications):

    • Glucosamine & Chondroitin: May support cartilage health.

    • Turmeric/Curcumin: Natural anti-inflammatory.

    • Vitamin D & K2: Supports joint and bone health.

    • Collagen peptides: Emerging research suggests potential benefits.

3. Weight Management

  • Even small weight loss can relieve significant pressure on joints, especially knees and hips. Every pound lost reduces 4+ pounds of pressure on knees.

4. Mind-Body Approaches

  • Mindfulness meditation and grounding can help manage chronic pain and stress.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Proven to help those with chronic conditions reframe thoughts around pain.

  • Acupuncture: Has shown promise in pain relief for some osteoarthritis patients.

5. Alternative Therapies

  • Massage therapy: Can improve circulation and reduce stiffness. – We have lots of referrals for this area.

  • Topical herbal remedies The Dolor Cream we sell in office that I had created, may offer temporary relief.

  • Hydrotherapy: Warm water can ease stiffness and make movement easier."

Response from Theresa House, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, FMACP Healthy Healing Functional Medicine

"From a functional medicine perspective, we look at root causes like chronic inflammation, poor gut health, nutrient deficiencies, metabolic imbalance (like insulin resistance), and even chronic stress. Here’s how I approach it:

1. Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition- A whole-foods diet that reduces sugar, processed carbs, and inflammatory fats is a game changer. I often recommend a Mediterranean or Paleo-style template with plenty of colorful veggies, omega-3-rich fish, herbs like turmeric and ginger, and bone broth or collagen to support joint health.

2. Targeted Supplements– Every plan is personalized, but some of my go-tos include: • Tumeric/Curcumin for inflammation • Omega- 3s for joint lubrication and immune balance • Collagen to help rebuild cartilage • Vitamin D + K2, magnesium and sometimes Boswellia for pain and mobility support

3. Gut Health – A big one that often gets missed. An imbalanced microbiome can drive systemic inflammation and worsen joint pain. Healing the gut can go a long way toward calming the immune system.

4. Lifestyle– Movement (even gentle), stress reduction, quality sleep, and sometimes weight loss are all part of the plan. These aren’t just “nice to haves”—they can radically shift how your joints feel and function. Osteoarthritis doesn’t have to mean a future of worsening pain or surgery. With the right tools and root-cause approach, you can feel better and move better—naturally!"

Response from Wendy Shuff, ND, RN - Live Simply Well

"Arthritis is both a localized and systemic condition, therefore lifestyle changes are a key factor for improving the quality of life. Modalities such as diet, exercise and targeted nutritional supplements are key.

Working with a qualified practitioner to test and evaluate your specific needs will ensure the best outcome. Decreasing sugar, increasing healthy protein and fats, balancing hormones and getting adequate daily movement are all imperative.

I also highly recommend CBD therapy for pain management and overall reduction of inflammation. New advances in regenerative injection therapies like prolotherapy and platelet rich plasma can also bring much needed relief. Keep in mind, injections simply do not work or last if the other factors are not addressed. Collaborating with your practitioner can lead to significant improvement!"

Response from Renata Trebing - Nourish With Renata

"Nutrition can play a powerful role in managing osteoarthritis by reducing inflammation, supporting joint health, and promoting hormone balance—especially for women in midlife. Anti-inflammatory foods like wild-caught salmon, extra virgin olive oil, turmeric, leafy greens, and berries are proven to ease joint pain and stiffness. Collagen-rich bone broth and vitamin C-packed citrus fruits help support cartilage repair. From a holistic lens, stabilizing blood sugar and balancing estrogen are key, as hormonal shifts can worsen inflammation and discomfort. Incorporating these strategies not only supports healthier joints but can also improve energy, mobility, and overall quality of life. If you’re ready for a personalized plan that fits your unique needs, I’d love to support you—reach out anytime!"

Response from Dr. Kim Tran, DC, CACCP - Revive Chirpractic

"There are several natural and non-invasive ways to support joint health and ease osteoarthritis symptoms—especially when you're trying to avoid medications or more aggressive interventions.Natural anti-inflammatories like turmeric (curcumin), omega-3 fatty acids (from wild fish or algae), and even boswellia can be powerful allies.

Gentle movement like yoga, tai chi, or swimming helps maintain flexibility without stressing the joints. And don’t underestimate the power of hydration, sleep, and an anti-inflammatory diet (think no processed foods)—they’re foundational for calming the fire of chronic inflammation.

One increasingly popular option is shockwave therapy (also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy or ESWT). It’s a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate circulation, break up calcifications, and support tissue regeneration around affected joints. Many people with osteoarthritis find that shockwave therapy helps reduce pain and improve mobility—especially in knees, hips, and shoulders. It’s a great option for those looking to avoid injections or surgery."

Response from Francine Simms, RN, BSN

"When it comes to treating osteoarthritis naturally, a well-rounded, research-backed approach can offer real relief. An anti-inflammatory diet rich in whole foods, healthy fats, and antioxidants helps reduce joint inflammation at the root. Consistent, low-impact movement like walking, stretching, or yoga keeps joints mobile and muscles strong, while daily sunshine supports vitamin D production for bone and immune health. Therapies like red light and infrared sauna are known to ease joint pain and stiffness by enhancing circulation and lowering inflammation. On the cellular level, IV nutrient therapy with antioxidants like glutathione and vitamin C, along with NAD+  a coenzyme essential for energy production and healthy aging can help repair tissues, fight oxidative stress, and reduce systemic inflammation. This holistic approach supports your body’s natural healing pathways and promotes long-term joint health."
