Thyroid Surgery: What No One Told Me (Recovery, Unexpected Symptoms & The One Thing That Helped)

When I first heard the words "there's a 75% chance this is cancer," my mind immediately went to worst-case scenarios. Especially after loosing my father and other family members to cancer and watching still more family and friends battle this terrible disease.
As a mom of two, a business owner, and someone who had always been relatively healthy, I wasn't prepared for the fear, uncertainty, and endless questions that came with needing thyroid surgery.
Would I risk losing my voice?
Would the surgery be painful?
Would I need medication forever?
Would I ever feel like myself again?
In the latest podcast episode of My Thyroid Journey, I share the answers to those questions and so much more. While every person's experience is different, I hope my story offers encouragement to anyone facing thyroid surgery, a thyroid cancer diagnosis, or ongoing thyroid-related symptoms.

What I Wish I Had Known Before Thyroid Surgery
Looking back, there were several things that made a huge difference in my recovery.
A meal train, arranging help with my children, taking time away from work, and having the right supplies ready ahead of time helped reduce stress and allowed me to focus on healing.
One thing surprised me more than anything else:
The surgery itself was not nearly as painful as I expected.
The fear beforehand was far worse than the actual recovery.
Of course, there were challenges along the way, and there was one symptom after surgery that completely caught me off guard—something no one warned me about. In the podcast episode, I share exactly what happened, what caused it, and the simple thing that helped me recover almost immediately.
The Unexpected Changes After Surgery
One of the most surprising parts of my journey wasn't physical at all.
For years, I had struggled with anxiety that seemed to appear out of nowhere. While surgery wasn't a magic solution, I experienced a dramatic improvement almost immediately after my thyroid surgery.
At the same time, some symptoms didn't disappear overnight.
I still had brain fog.
I still had to work on my nutrition.
I still had to address dry eyes, hair loss, energy levels, and overall healing.
One of the biggest lessons I learned was this:
Removing cancer and restoring health are not always the same thing.
The surgery addressed a critical problem, but true healing required a much deeper ongoing approach.

The Importance of Being Your Own Health Advocate
If there's one message I hope people take away from my thyroid journey, it's this:
Trust yourself.
For years, I was told my bloodwork looked "normal."
Yet I knew something wasn't right.
The anxiety.
The fatigue.
The weight gain.
The brain fog.
The hair loss.
The feeling that my body was trying to tell me something.
Because I kept asking questions and digging deeper, my thyroid cancer was discovered at Stage 1 before it had spread.
That persistence changed everything.
Life Two Years Later
Today, I still have only half of my thyroid.
I continue to prioritize nutrition, exercise, nervous system regulation, and ongoing monitoring of my thyroid health.
Thankfully, my remaining thyroid lobe is functioning well, and I've learned more about my body than I ever expected.
The journey didn't end with surgery.
In many ways, it was just the beginning.
